WHAT IS A FOLDING BIKE

What exactly is a folding bike (and why are they becoming more popular)?

Before we dive into why so many people are choosing folding bikes, let’s first quickly explain what a folding bike actually is. You’ve probably already guessed it: it’s a bike you can fold into a compact size. Thanks to hinges in the frame and handlebars, you can fold it up easily and take it with you on the train, in the car, or even store it under your desk at work.

That’s why you see them more and more on public transport. People ride them to the station, fold them up, hop on the train, and continue cycling once they arrive. Super convenient for commuters.

Folding bikes have been around longer than you think

Did you know folding bikes were already being used around 1890? Not by holidaymakers or city commuters, but by the military. In France and the U.S., soldiers used them to move around quickly and efficiently. It wasn’t until after World War II that production for everyday cyclists really took off, mainly because more and more people started commuting to work.

Nowadays, folding bikes are also popular for holidays. If you’ve got a campervan or a caravan, you’ll know space can be tight. Taking a regular bike isn’t always easy, but a folding bike? Just pop it in the boot — no bike rack needed.

What makes a folding bike different from a regular bike?

Let’s break it down:

A folding bike is smaller and — you guessed it — foldable.

Most people use them for commuting or traveling, but they’re also super handy in the city.

You can store them indoors, which means less chance of theft.

The seat and handlebars are adjustable, so it fits almost everyone.

When buying one, pay attention to the weight (you’ll need to lift it sometimes), the size, the frame material (steel or aluminium?), and how the brake and gear cables are routed.

The folding mechanism usually works with two hinges. Sounds simple, but always check the manual before your first ride.
